Strike (1925)

Sergei Eisenstein’s Strike was released on April 28, 1925. Sometimes I like to imagine what would have happened if Eisenstein had given up on collectivism, focused on individualism, and become a good old fashioned Hollywood capitalist. Or better yet, if he had just been born in Germany. Alas, we have to tease apart the politics, the polemics, and the propaganda to get to the genius filmmaking.

I’m all for instant gratification, so go ahead and watch it on YouTube. But this one’s worth owning, and I recommend Kino’s 2011 release of Strike, restored by Cinémathèque de Toulouse, with a new score from the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra.
