As part of TIFF Cinematheue’s Hollywood Classics series, William A. Wellman’s Wings will get special screening at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Tuesday 27, 2012 at 6:30 pm.

Where does one even start when talking about Wings? It was a big-budget Paramount release in 1927, starring “It” girl Clara Bow, Buddy Rogers, Richard Arlen, and an as-yet-unknown (and lovely!) Gary Cooper. Wings was the first winner of an Academy Award for best picture, and the only silent film to win until The Artist took the prize in 2012. It features some amazing aerial scenes and was both popular and critically acclaimed in its day.

Then, Wings was lost – or at least thought to be lost. But when a print was discovered in the archives of the Cinémathèque française, Wings got a lavish restoration to mark the Paramount Studios centenary., Not only is the picture improved, but the restoration includes authentic sound effects from the period, the original score, and a recreation of “Handschiegl” colour effects for flames and explosions included in the original. In short, the Wings restoration is a must see.

There is, of course, a fabulous Blu-ray release of the Wings restoration, but don’t miss the chance to see on a screen with an audience at our modern movie-palace the TIFF Bell Lightbox!
