Claire Denis Retro Comes to the TIFF Bell Lightbox
For the first time in more than a decade, Toronto will get a serious look at the work of filmmaker Claire Denis with TIFF Cinematheque’s upcoming retrospective Objects of Desire: The Cinema of Claire Denis, launching Friday, October 11, 2013 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.
After spending time working with filmmakers such as Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch, Denis delivered her feature direction debut with Chocolat in 1988. Since then, Denis has made more than 20 feature-length films and short films. While many of her films focus on broad themes of colonialism and post-colonialism in Africa, shooting on location, Denis has a unique way of combing larger history with personal history. As a result, Denis has crafted a reputation as one of the finest auteurs working in cinema today, and as her most recent film Bastards demonstrates, she’s working at the height her powers now.
To celebrate Denis’ impressive body of work, TIFF Cinematheque is hosting a comprehensive retrospective which includes 15 of her feature films and several of her shorts. In addition, Denis will appear in person on Oct. 18, 2013 at 6:30 pm to present Bastards and participate in a q&a. Perhaps most interestingly for Denis aficionados, the filmmaker will appear at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on October 17 to present and discuss films of her choosing, specifically a restored 35mm print of Djibril Diop Mambéty’s Touki Bouki as well as A Thousand Suns (Mille Soleils), which screened as part of the Toronto International Film Festival 2013′s Wavelengths programme.
