The Criterion Contraption

We all remember Julie who cooked her way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking and we’re all familiar with bloggers who are working their way through 1001 Movies to See Before You Die. But it was only yesterday that I discovered The Criterion Contraption and Matthew Dessem’s noble goal of watching every title in the Criterion Collection. Sweet!

And please understand, Dessem is not just watching these movies and saying I liked it or I didn’t like it. He watches the complete disc, extras, commentaries, the whole shebang and then writes thoughtful and detailed essays. I would tell you more about it but I don’t have to – The Criterion Contraption came to the attention of the late Roger Ebert in 2009 and he of course wrote about it far more eloguently than I. You can read THE MAN WHO IS SCALING MT. CRITERION FILM BY FILM yourself.

The Criterion Contraption doesn’t have a lot of fancy social media stuff. You subscribe to the rss here but should just visit the site at
