Hot Docs 2014: Everything Will Be (2014)

¬†Everything Will Be is a beautifully shot and melancholic look at Vancouver’s rapidly vanishing Chinatown. Inspired by neon sign looming over the Chinatown holdout merchants and the encroaching condo developments, Julia Kwan’s documentary is a measured look at the implications and ramifications of gentrification. Does gentrification mean homogenization? Or does it mean making way for something different, yet equally vibrant?

As any urban dweller knows, change is the only constant in city life. As painful as the evolution of Chinatown may be for its current denziens, the ghosts of those pushed out by original Chinese influx linger as well. Everything Will Be doesn’t prescribe any solutions, but subtly advocated for a reasoned approach to change.
