Hot Docs 2013: The Manor (2013)

Move over Friedman’s – there’s a new dysfunctional family in town. Toronto filmmaker Shawney Cohen’s debut doc feature The Manor is set to open the Hot Docs 2013 festival and it’s a disturbing doozy. Cohen’s family owns The Manor, a combo strip joint and notell-motel, in Guelph, Ontario. While Cohen may call himself a filmmaker, even he has to admit he’s most qualified to work in the family business, along side his obese father, anorexic mother, and morally unconflicted brother. But this doc isn’t about managing a strip club – it’s about the barely functioning family behind it.

Cohen never manages to draw an overt correlation between the business and the problems in his family, you gotta think, right? There’s a lot of buzz about The Manor – it’s the opening doc, afterall – but if you decide to check it out, brace yourself. I spent a lot of time waiting for some redeeming qualities about Dad to be revealed, but the moment never arrived. And they’re actually cannibalizing Mom.
