Hot Docs 2013: Terms and Conditions May Apply (2013)
Do you actually read the “Terms and Conditions” before you check off at that little box that says you did? Modern humans are confronted with that check box everyday, and Terms and Conditions May Apply, from director Cullen Hoback, sets out to explore the fine print you may have missed by agreeing before reading. Not surprisingly, it turns out, Google, Facebook, and other internet big-boys have essentially laid claim to you, your friends, your family, and your very essence.
While Terms and Conditions May Apply doesn’t really offer up any new information, Hoback does a stellar job of corralling a lot of information, and the consequences of giving up so much personal data, and presenting in clear terms. Toss in a few real life horror stories – a 7th grader swarmed by the secret service for innocently saying President Obama should watch out and people being detained during the royal wedding celebrations for planning to protest – and you have a really chilling possibility of a complete surveillance state staring you in the face.
Such suppositions often come off as conspiratorial, but Hoback sidesteps this in Terms and Conditions May Apply with – well, overwhelming, fact based evidence.
