Top 5 Most Over Hyped Movies
Here are my top-five horrendously overrated and over hyped movies, and before you read on, just know that these are entirely based on my opinion. That doesn’t mean that I’m apologizing for any of my choices, but I feel like there are some seriously overrated films that everyone loves and I just can’t seem to wrap my head around. I notice that I sometimes sound a tad mean and maybe even a little pompous, but I promise you I’m the most self-deprecating person you will ever meet (reassurance, ladies and gents!). So without further ado…

Oubah Osman’s Top Most Over Hyped Movies Ever
Twilight (2008)
This is self-explanatory. Terrible direction. Terrible acting. Terrible script. I put this as the last one because everyone dislikes this film to a degree (I’m convinced of this and no one can convince me otherwise) so technically it’s not as overrated as the other movies because it’s not “critically acclaimed” so much as popular, but it still makes a ton of money and somehow gets recognition by people as a “good film”. Unfortunate, I know.
Pretty Woman (1990)
A lot of people love this film and hail it as a classic, but it really isn’t. The only appeal that I can find in regards to it is this “Cinderella” premise that follows a lot of romantic comedies. It just was nowhere near as impressive as it’s painted to be and Edward (Richard Gere) is impossibly unlikable as a character. Nothing about this film was captivating or deserving of praise. In the end, it just fell flat and lacked the badassery that Viv (Julia Roberts) seemed to embody at first, which was a huge disappointment.
Avatar (2009)
If I was judging this movie solely on beauty or the amount of blue seen in one film, it would not be on this list. But alas, it’s inexcusably one of the most overhyped and overrated movies ever. The plot was so predictable and tedious. After I left the theatre I realized the next day that I hadn’t even thought of the film once, and I feel truly fantastic films lingering with you for awhile. Don’t get me wrong, this film is beautiful and visually creative to the max, but it doesn’t have much for you to hold onto in terms of substance.
The Notebook (2004)
I know, I know. For all of you who are waiting for your Noah, I give to you a heartfelt sigh of sorrow. I just wasn’t impressed with this movie. I think the one thing I did enjoy about this film was the chemistry between our lovely Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, and the fact that it launched the career of these two fantastic actors.. But the script was so immensely cheesy I found myself chuckling throughout. I mean, that scene where he’s hanging off of a Ferris wheel speaks for itself. It’s just one of those bad movies, if you know what I mean. Nothing about the story is unique and it just all seems too… chick flicky (but not in the good way).
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Yes, your eyesight is fine. I chose this film as number one on my most over hyped movies of all-time, ladies and gentlemen. This film. The one that I heard every single person rave about for weeks before I even saw it and then cringed through conversations of “But why!” and “It’s Batman, though!” after I saw it. It’s just not a good film. It’s full of plot-holes, and then the boring surface romance with Catwoman, the completely ho-hum death scenes… it just wasn’t my cup of tea. For a film so anti-climactic, it really didn’t need to be three hours long. Now I know this film is the epitome of awesome to many, but I have to say the first two were far better. The beginning was incredible and got me so revved up and excited, but it just fell apart and the process of it crashing and burning was really unfortunate. RIP Bane, you didn’t deserve such a boring death! You deserved better, my friend.

Star Wars (1977), Schindler’s List, Malcolm X, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, There Will Be Blood. I have no doubt ‘Lincoln’ would make the list, in the unlikely event I see it.
I was going to say Waterworld should make this list, but I don’t really remember if it was over-hyped marketing wise or if everyone already knew it was terrible before it hit the screen. Suffice it to say, it’s terrible.
I agree with all of them (though I did enjoy Dark Knight Rises). I’d also add Titanic (1997) and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
I’ll be in my corner ducking tomatoes
Ooh, Titanic. Good call! I haven’t seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies yet, because I haven’t found 97 spare hours to invest.
I don’t have a problem with any of your picks. “Pretty Woman” send an ugly message that women need to be rescued by a rich handsome man, even if he is a soulless jerk. My five would probably be “Life is Beautiful” (an appallingly offensive piece of trash), “The English Patient,” “Titanic,” “Tokyo Story” and (I can hear the cries of dissent) “Tootsie.” I think “Tootsie” is at its heart a disgustingly sexist movie that puts out the message that the best role model for a woman is a man in a dress.
